While I’ve been offering facials on Martha’s Vineyard over the past six years, I often get the same question: “How do I keep my skin hydrated and redness-free in the summer?” Dehydrated skin is prone to be more sensitive. So beside drinking plenty of water, this is what you can do to keep your healthy glow.
Topical hydration is essential, as the moisture level in skin dramatically decreases when exposed to the sun’s powerful rays. Before heading outdoors pre-hydrate your skin using a deeply nourishing cleanser like the Coconut milk cleanser with a Clarisonic Pro brush on gentle setting. This will help to unclog the pores and prepare your skin to absorb as much hydration as possible.
Follow with a hydrating and alcohol free mist, apply a serum containing a plant based hyaluronic acid like the Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic serum (this will plump, hydrate and deliver antioxidants to deeper layers of your skin then your moisturizer can get to) and apply your sun care products to protect your precious skin this season like the super hydrating Tropical Vanilla Sun Cream spf 32 (available for Face and Body). This moisturizer actually increases the moisture in your skin by 250% in just 7 days!! Or try the lightweight Caramel Latte Tinted moisturizer spf 25.
Even under an umbrella or large brim of your hat your skin is absorbing UV reflection from the water, sand, concrete and even grass. Remember to reapply your sunscreen every couple of hours when at the beach, working out, or working in your garden. The easiest way to do this is with the Colorescience’s sheer and non-clogging mineral sunscreen powder brush spf 30 or 50.
And don’t forget to put the Stone crop Hydrating mist in your beach bag, so you can keep your skin hydrated and cool all day long. The healing Stone crop juice will increase your UV protection and lower your chance to develop new sun spots and hyperpigmentation.
Sooth, re-hydrate and heal your skin with the healing, pigment reducing and hydrating Stone Crop Masque at the end of the day or treat your sun drenched skin to a calming and healing facial with the most wonderful Hibiscus and Calendula Mask! Then apply a night moisturizer to your face, neck and décolleté, as well as the back of your hands, that is high in antioxidants, aloe vera and natural vitamin E. Make sure your vitamin E is pure and from a natural source like tomatoes, as it is an incredible healer and powerful antioxidant, and be aware of synthetic vitamin E, which is way cheaper alternative found in many skin care products and delivers no benefits at all.
Next, I’ll never go out without my Eyescreen spf 30 on, during the day it prevents sun damage (like loss of collagen, and uneven skin tone around my eyes), by shielding the tender skin around the eyes, reflecting UV rays and for an evening out it brightens the eye area without the heavy look of a concealer.
Last but not least, check your lip gloss. Traditional ingredients that make your lips shine, may actually magnify the effect of UV rays, and may be the cause to lip cancer. Make sure your lip gloss is made with natural ingredients and has zinc oxide or titanium dioxide with spf 30 or more.
At the end sweep an illuminating bronzer brush across your cheek bones, forehead, down the nose bridge and below your jawline, this will look stunning on your healthy, hydrated, and redness free skin for the healthiest sun kissed glow!
For the hot summer nights out apply the Coconut Firming Body Lotion for an unbeatable glow all over!
